How We Conduct Training
Spreadsheet Alchemy’s recommended training approach is through an in-person, hands-on workshop in a dedicated computer classroom (or alternatively with individual laptops) where the attendees can work through examples during class. Material is presented in small portions and then immediately followed-up with examples demonstrating this element in an appropriate context for their organization. This allows the instructor to address misconceptions, answer particular questions, and assist any student in real time if a problem arises. I realize that students will have varying degrees of comfort with Excel. Therefore, I make every effort to maintain a course pace that meets all students’ needs and ensure that no student feels left behind.

The greatest reinforcement to learning is the immediate application of that learning to a specific project. A substantial benefit to Spreadsheet Alchemy’s instruction is for students to recreate classroom examples in real time, reinforcing the topics under discussion. This is particularly critical when it comes to instruction in programming and writing basic software code in VBA. We encourage our students to bring to class an idea or application that they would like to develop into an Excel tool, and then give them time to begin implementing their vision with expert guidance.
What Students Will Learn
Many clients request that Spreadsheet Alchemy provide training in selected elements of Excel and VBA to their staff so that these individuals can create their own automated applications as needs arise. Spreadsheet Alchemy will jointly work with an institution’s staff to create a customized training workshop that includes the subject matter of most relevance to the organization.
There are basic fundamental concepts of Excel that all course workshops must cover as a foundation. But beyond these underlying topics the session direction is determined by the students themselves. Spreadsheet Alchemy can recommend basic sequences of topics that in our experience students find the most beneficial.
Of course, there are myriads of exceptionally impressive Excel tools that can be created without any VBA coding. In fact, nearly an entire day of instruction is possible just in presenting the “hidden” features of Excel (from the menu bar) that are lesser-known but yet extremely powerful. Students benefit by seeing what is possible, and then use their own imagination to develop an outline of what they want to accomplish from within Excel.
